Specimen Requirements

Whole blood: 4 mL (min 1 mL) in sodium heparin or EDTA; Bone marrow aspirate: 2 mL (min 0.5 mL) in sodium heparin or EDTA; Bone marrow core biopsy: 2 cm (min 1 cm) in sterile container with 2-4 mL MPLN RPMI transport media; Fresh tissue: 5 mm^3 in sterile container with 2-4 mL MPLN RPMI transport media; Fine needle aspirate: 4 mL (min 0.5 mL) in sterile container with 2-4 mL MPLN RPMI transport media; Fluids (cerebrospinal, pleural, synovial, pericardial, etc): 4 mL (min 0.5 mL) in sterile container with 2-4 mL MPLN RPMI transport media; Bronchoalveolar lavage: 10 mL (min 5 mL) in sterile container with 2-4 mL MPLN RPMI transport media. If RPMI media or MPLN transport media is not available, send in sterile saline.

Specimen Stability

Specimen stable for 48 hours at 4°C

Storage & Handling

Ship with ice pack. Protect from extreme temperature. Separate ice pack from specimen.

Causes for Rejections

Specimens stored at incorrect temperature; Non-viable specimens; Specimens in inappropriate anticoagulant; Too few cells; Hemolysis; Specimen clotted
